NY Times Magazine: "Building the First Long-Distance Hiking Trail in Kurdistan"

Let's walk!

The New York Times Magazine, April 24, 2022, featured Abraham Path Initiative's flagship project: generating the first long-distance hiking trail in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The Zagros Mountain Trail will be 215km long, beginning at the monastery of Al Qosh in the west, following ancient pilgrimage and trading routes, and shepherds’ tracks to reach the foot of Mount Halgurd in the east.

API conceived of this long-distance trail in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) in 2018. Abraham Path Fellows were in the region researching local cultural heritage. Since then we've continued both tracks of engagement: cultural heritage and trail development. Even Covid-19 didn't stop us.

Your support will make this trail come to life. A 1:1 challenge grant of $32,500 from our board of directors is in place to make your tax-deductible gift go twice as far.

The trail is a work in progress. In late 2022 and in 2023 there will be opportunities to walk. Sign up here to find out what's happening.

Together with your investment, we will complete this trail.

We will co-create a world-class walking trail that generates revenue in off-the-beaten path communities in Iraqi Kurdistan, benefitting local people and global citizens.
